Frequently Asked Questions

What are the dates and times of the Academy? The Police and Fire Chaplain’s Training Academy trains twice yearly, usually in October and May.. Registration is on Sunday evening of the Academy week with the final meal offered noon on Friday of Academy week.

Where is the Academy located? The Police and Fire Chaplain’s Training Academy is located on the campus of the Washington Criminal Justice Training Center (WCJTC), 19010 1st Avenue South, Burien, Washington.

Will there be transportation from Sea-Tac? Yes, but due to WCJTC scheduling, (chaplain room assignments) you will need to be ready for your curbside pick up not later than 1430. For those flying in a specific rally point will be provided to you.

Should I contact the Washington Criminal Justice Training Commission with my questions? No. PFCTA administrative function is not on site. Academy questions and concerns should be directed to the PFCTA Staff. If we cannot answer the question or take care of the concern we will direct you to contact the WCJTC staff. At that time we will give out the contact person and telephone number.

What do I need to bring? Bring dress uniform, if you have one, or a coat and tie if you do not, for the graduation service. You might want to bring a camera.

What kind of housing arrangements are there? see
Housing Information

Can I come late or leave early or what if I cannot be in attendance at all the classes? We understand that emergencies come up. However, in order to graduate you will need to be in attendance at and complete class assignments. If you cannot do so, we will be happy to enroll you in the next academy so that you may finish up. If you intend to accomplish personal business while here please do so outside of Academy hours.

What are dress standards for the Academy? Business casual to include slacks and polo shirt, open collar dress shirt, etc. Please no casual wear such as shorts, athletic shoes, etc.

What are direct contact hours and why are they important? Direct contact hours are those four-hour blocks of time that you will spend in direct contact with those you are training to serve. In order to train effectively., there must be first hand exposure to those we serve.

What meals are being offered? The first meal is a box lunch dinner on Sunday evening. Then we will join the normal student population for meals until Friday noon at which the last meal will be served. Meal choices are offered cafeteria style.

If I commute may I get a modified meal card or are there special diets (Jewish, Muslim, Vegetarian, etc.)? Meals are cafeteria style thus most needs can be met, however, in special case please give us plenty of notice.

What is food quality like? Because individual tastes vary widely it is hard to answer however there is variety and choice. In two chaplain events that I attended no complaints were received concerning the price, quantity, quality, and variety of the food available.

Why do I need a background check? Due to the location of the training it is necessary for all trainers and trainees to have a current background check.

Is there a contact telephone number at the Academy? At this time we do not have a contact number. If you have a cellular telephone it would be well to use that number as your contact number.

May I invite others to attend graduation? Yes, you may invite family, friends, department personnel, and others to graducation. You might invite them for dinner and then there will be a reception following.

What should I wear for graduation? You might wish to graduate in your uniform. If you do not have a uniform, a coat and tie would be acceptable.
